Women's Health Issues: Menopause

by
Share

“Menopause” can be an ugly word for some women for a number of reasons. Menopause typically occurs around 50 years of age, a time when most women are confident and content with their life. Unfortunately, all too often, this change in a a woman’s life can be
very miserable.

Nowadays, menopause is accompanied by hot flashes, sleep disturbances, irritability, and much much more. For other women, menopause may come prematurely and unnaturally for a number of reasons, which may include surgery. Some women choose to go thru
this period with medication, hoping that it would decrease symptoms without realizing that the medication may increase the risk for diseases, such as heart disease or cancer. What are the other options? There are various natural ways such as creams and neutraceuticals that can be very helpful, when consulting a doctor such as myself who specializes in natural, non-toxic ways to balance the body.

What is rarely discussed with menopausal women is the state of the adrenal glands. How many women know what this gland is and what it does? Would it alarm you to know that the status of this gland is the single most determining factor in relation to the severity of your menopausal symptoms? This gland reaches maturity in women at or around the age of 50. One function of the adrenal glands is to dispense estrogen and progesterone into your body. When your ovaries shut down production, your adrenals will slowly wean you off your estrogen high. This occurs only IF you have healthy adrenal glands. The more unhealthy and dysfunctional the adrenal glands are the worse the symptoms. Most women and men do not have healthy adrenals. Without this production you suffer hormonal withdrawals, like a drug addict who goes cold turkey.

We have simple diagnostic tests we offer at the FM&WC to determine the functionality of your adrenals. Once you are diagnosed, we can begin to support and rebuild your adrenals naturally with high dose vitamin therapy, herbs, minerals, essential fatty acids, and even bioidentical hormones, if necessary. No matter what the reason for your menopause we can ease this transition without the negative side effects.

Women's Health Issues: Breast Cancer

by
Share

Breast cancer are two words that send fear through the hearts of most women today. How do we stop this fear? First, we need to understand the processes that lead up to the diagnosis rather than focus on the disease process alone after the diagnosis. Most of the top disease specialists around the world agree that 80 to 90% of ALL TYPES of cancer derive from environmental origins that includes over toxic exposure to things such as herbacides, pesticides, steroids, antibiotics, food preservative, etc. So what’s the good news? The good news is that means we have control over our health.

It also means that inherited genetic factors make a minor contribution to susceptibility to most types of cancer. Statistically speaking, even the worst correlation between genetics and cancer is 42% for prostate cancer; 35% for colon cancer; and 27 % for breast cancer. This again shows that genetics are not to blame and that we have control of our lives.

Two things that can be found with every type of cancer include the loss of the body’s ability to control alkaline/acidic balance within the cell and a default in a major metabolic hormone. Other problems include toxicity and a low oxygenated environment in the diseased tissue. It is my opinion, along with many doctors who practice natural, non-toxic curative methods for cancer, that supporting the body’s own natural defenses against cancer is not only the answer to preventing cancer, but also to curing it. One main determining factor for the risk of breast cancer is your body’s overall lifetime exposure to estrogen.

Please note that not all estrogens are bad. The ones that the body produces are good. These estrogens protect you from osteoporosis, heart disease, and even cancer itself. The bad estrogens are the synthetic, man-made hormones we are exposed to everyday, such as plastic, herbacides and pesticides to name a few. Some synthetic estrogens that we knowingly take include birth control, synthetic hormone replacement and horse estrogen. One of my philosophies is to get rid of estrogen, whether you take them, make them or are unknowingly intoxicated with them, everyday in a healthy way.

There is so much information on the role of food as medicine for our bodies. However, what I have found is that we can eat enough to maintain our current status, but it’s impossible to eat enough good foods for it to be therapeutic. This means that if we are experiencing a health problem, such as cancer, we need to turn to neutraceuticals that are concentrated high dose forms of foods, vitamins, mineral, enzymes, etc. Eating a good diet alone will not fix the problem. Functional medicine will focus on the terrain or soil that you have created in your body that has caused it to become cancerous. We will not focus on the cancer itself. You have all heard of the great farmer who treats the soil and not the plant. Good soil, healthy plant; bad soil, sick plant. This is the same for the human body and is of the utmost importance for the treatment of cancer as well as the non-reoccurance of cancer. It has been stated that up to 80% of people who have had cancer once will have it again in their lifetime. This is because no one is addressing the underlying cause – the cause of the cancer – THE SOIL.

Chronic Stress

What exactly is stress? Stress can come in many forms, it could be emotional stress, chemical stress (toxicity), electromagnetic stress, physical stress, or anything else that elicits a stress response in the body. It doesn’t matter what kind of stress you have, your body perceives them as all the same. Stress has many effects on the body. It can lower your immune system, increase your cholesterol, blood sugar and blood pressure. It can cause sexual dysfunction, arthritis, heart disease, weight gain, irritable bowel syndrome, ulcers, cancer, as well as lower thyroid function and metabolism.

When you’re under stress your body switches into a fight or flight mode. When this takes place there are several physiological responses. You have a decrease of all non-critical processes. Your energy will be mobilized to your muscle. Digestion will be turned off (50 percent of people have digestive complaints), detoxification will be impaired, you have a decrease in cellular repair, and you will be placed in a catabolic (breaking down) state. This catabolic state will weaken all your systems.

One of the biggest health concerns in America today is the obesity epidemic that is affecting young and old people alike. America is one of the unhealthiest nations in the world and obesity has a direct and indirect connection to almost every known chronic disease we suffer today.

Most women focus on dieting for weight loss. However, the constant complaint about most diets is we lose the weight, but it comes back as soon as we stop dieting, and in many instances we gain more weight than what was lost. Now, there are surgical procedures for becoming thinner, which in some cases may be necessary and even life saving, but in the majority of cases surgeries set you up for other debilitating or life threatening disease processes. By only concentrating on your weight and becoming skinnier, diets fail in the long run. The primary focus for weight loss is body composition.

Body composition is the ratio of muscle, fat and water. It is impossible to sustain weight loss when we increase fat and decrease muscle and proper body water. This process happens with all diets on the market today and it is the reason diets fail. At the FM&WC, we use modern diagnostic testing to make sure you are losing fat, not muscle and water. What does this mean to you?
With more muscle mass your metabolism increases and constantly burns calories at a very high rate. With less muscle and water and increased fat your metabolism is much slower, burning calories at a slower rate. At the FM&WC, we use BIA testing that measures your body composition. (See below for more detail). Once this is calculated, Dr. Ozzie will provide a natural wellness program to help you lose weight.

A major contributing factor to obesity is environmental toxicity. If you are toxic, your body will increase the fat to store the toxins causing you to gain more fat. Remember, more fat = slower metabolism. You may work out all the time and have a healthy diet but still can’t lose weight. Why? Because your body is toxic. If you are too toxic you cannot burn fat because the toxins will enter your blood stream and make you very sick. The body’s wisdom is to minimize its ability to burn fat preventing you from losing weight. How do you fix this issue? DETOX naturally at the FM&WC.

Another reason for obesity is due to increased stress which raises your cortisol levels which in turn slows down your fat burning potential. There could be a number of reasons why you may not be able to lose weight.

At the FM&WC, we focus on the individual patient and determine what their issues are and fix them naturally, so that you can be happy with your natural self.

Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) Testing

At the FM&WC, we use BIA testing. BIA measures two values, electrical resistance and electrical capacitance. With these two values along with your height, weight, age, and sex, we can calculate your body composition, fluid distribution, basal metabolic rate, and your phase angle.

Total body water tells us the amount of water presently in your body. The intracellular and extracellular water values show your cellular water balance. You want more water inside of your cell than outside. The first sign of decreased health is a shift of intracellular water to extracellular water. There are 15 different reasons for this water shift, and all of them are
related to poor health.

A little about Detoxification…

The seven symptoms of chronic poisoning are fatigue, sleep disturbances, gastrointestinal distress, headaches, allergy symptoms, confusion, and anxiety. You might wonder what the poison is. It’s toxicity. Every chemical reaction in your body produces toxins in the form of acid, which we measure with the BIA test. Your detoxifying organs (liver, kidneys, lungs, large intestine, and skin) are able to handle this burden. We ingest toxins through our food, water and air. There are over 10,000 chemical additives in our food supply. The average American ingests 14 pounds of additives, 158 pounds of sugar, and 8 pounds of
salt per year. This is way more than your organs were designed to handle.

If you have dysbiosis, which is an imbalance of the intestinal tract, you can greatly increase your toxic burden. Dysbiosis is an overgrowth of yeast, bacteria, and parasites. These are all living organisms, and living organisms eat, and when they eat, they go to the bathroom. Their bowel movements are very toxic to you.

We are constantly ingesting heavy metals such as mercury, lead, arsenic, and many more everyday. This ingestion comes from the food we eat, the water we drink, and the air we breath.

All these chemicals, metals and toxins can be stored in your body, usually in body fat and in the extracellular space. This can cause cellular fluid shifts that are measurable with the BIA and will indicate levels of toxicity, all which can be done at the FM&WC.

Women's Health Issues: Premenstrual Syndrome

Tired of yelling at your family every month?
Having increased food binges, depression during menstruation?
Suffering from headaches, back pain, breast tenderness, cramps and face breakouts?
Are you concerned with side effects of hormone therapy or other PMS medication?

How many women have had some type of medication to alleviate PMS that has not helped; helped very little or made you worse and gave you other unwanted side effects, such as weight gain? Did you know that your hormones are just reacting to their environment? Did you know that your hormones are not the primary cause of PMS and that they are downstream from the problem?

This means hormones can be adjusted naturally if we understand what stresses in your life are causing them to react in a negative way. This may mean we don’t have to use anything to directly adjust your hormones. Instead of looking for a disease process with PMS, we look at functional imbalances in your body that would impact your hormone balance negatively. Some examples may include blood sugar handling disorders, high insulin, high cortisol, mental/emotional stress, and digestive issues. Once this is determined, we at FM&WC begin to fix these problems naturally and let your body restore normal hormone levels and ratios on its own.

Tired of worrying about the negative side affects of long-term medication?
Tired of taking thyroid medication for the rest of your life?
What if there’s another answer, what if your body can stop the symptoms of thyroid disorders on its own?

Functional thyroid disorders are very common and generally overlooked in today’s healthcare model. Most patients that have functional thyroid imbalances do not have primary thyroid problems.

We have learned a lot about genetics in the last 10 years. What we have found is that we are all completely different and unique, thus a lot of an individual’s information is overlooked in our current medical model. What may be a normal reading for someone else may be a serious problem for another. You have heard the analogy “one person’s garbage is another person’s treasure” and vice versa. This is why it is imperative to look at many factors of an individual and not just at one particular organ of the human body.

With thyroid disorders, it is not enough just to look at one number such as the thyroid stimulating hormone and say whether it’s too high or too low and prescribe medication for it. This does not fix the problem; it only suppresses your symptoms! At the FM& WC, we determine the causes for your numbers to bee too high or low. Then, we fix the cause and repair any damages that may have occurred, allowing the body to restore normal function on its own.

Let’s look closely at the production and pathway of thyroid hormones. First, you have a gland in your brain that sends a signal to your thyroid to produce thyroid hormones. Stress can block this signal. Once the thyroid hormones are stimulated the thyroid needs certain minerals to create the hormones. However, these minerals can be depleted due to several factors, including heavy metal toxicity. When the hormone is made, it has to be converted from inactive hormone to active hormone, primarily in the liver. Any dysfunction in the liver can cause this conversion to decrease drastically leaving you with an inactive hormone. Then the hormone has to be transported to the rest of the body, 20% of which are transformed in the gut. In order for this to occur, you must have good bacteria in your gut, which most women do not. When the hormone finally arrives at the tissue, it must react with the receptor to work. Similar to a lock and key – many things can jam the lock, such as competition from other hormones, including estrogen. Changes in your acidic/alkaline balance can disturb this process.

If you would like to look at these or other possible reasons for your thyroid dysfunction, please contact the FM&WC.

Making the Right Choices…your child’s life depends on it

Vaccines are an extremely sensitive topic – do we immunize our children? If so, when is the best time? Please keep in mind as you read through this article, the information expressed can be refuted and proved by both sides. The information provided is not intended to lead a parent one way or the other. The sole intent of this article is to provide you with more information so that you can investigate and gain more intelligence on whether vaccines are the right choice for you and your family. Remember, your child is yours and you alone are responsible for them not your doctors. No one but you has to live with the decisions you make for your child.

There are no long-term studies that determine the negative impacts immunizations have on the human body, such as cancers, autoimmune diseases and nervous system diseases, such as Autism? However, they most defi nitely can. be. The word “can” should be enough for parents to pause for just a second and consider the impacts of vaccinations. The best proof is to talk to a parent whose child is suffering from the effects of vaccines – their baby was normal and after their routine vaccination, the child became “different”.

The simple fact that cannot be denied is that the chemicals contained in vaccines are suspended by toxins – allergy forming and poisonous toxins that include, but are not limited to formaldehyde, mercury, aluminum, and chicken egg protein, which are extremely harmful to the human body. Amazingly enough, doctors never prescribe medication to an adult without obtaining information about the family and personal medical history family. BUT, babies are administered vaccines as soon they are born. Because of the lack of intelligence on a baby’s history, it is diffi cult to prove that a vaccine has indeed had negative impacts on a child.

To simply summarize, there are toxic substances in vaccines. So, why are some children adversely affected by vaccines and others not? Because each child is an individual – the genetics, toxic load and organ reserve of each person is different. “Toxic load” is a term that was coined in recent years to spotlight the fact that we, as humans, are under tremendous amounts of toxins in our environment – the higher the exposure, the higher the toxic load or toxicity. This is vital, because toxic load combined with organ reserve and genetics determine how much toxicity one’s body can handle. If you have ingested or absorbed more toxins than you can detoxify, you are body will be damaged and susceptible to illnesses. For example, compare a person who drinks the occasional glass of wine or beer to an alcoholic. A drink to the occasional drinker can sometimes benefi t their health, while an occasional drink to an alcoholic can cause liver cancer. The same idea can be applied to the chemicals that vaccines are suspended in – too much toxins for your child’s genetic ability to detoxify will be detrimental.

Now, organ reserve is how much an organ can store vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, etc. Remember, everyone is an individual, so every organ has a different amount and speed at which they create this reserve. Think of an organ reserve as a savings account – when in fi nancial trouble you may dip into the saving account, but if there are no funds then you may be in trouble. The same thought can be applied to your child’s organ reserve. If your child’s organ reserve is minimal, there is no safety net. Detoxifi cation is nutrient-dependent; we use vitamins, minerals and proteins. So if a child is marginally defi cient in these things coupled with a genetic predisposition of slower detoxifi cation rate, this can cause them to be poisoned and seriously damaged by the chemicals in a vaccine.

It is very important to note that Dr. Ozzie is neither for nor against vaccinations. He is a believer in researching your information before making life impacting choices. His recommendations before considering vaccinations is performing blood tests for verifying nutritional status and genetic testing to determine if there are detoxification problems.

If you choose to vaccinate, find a pediatrician who is willing to changing the “schedule” of vaccinations. The schedule should be as follows:

  • Only vaccinate your child once every six months with absolutely no multiple shots in one – these are some of the most dangerous
  • Demand that the vaccines are mercury-free (these are available).
  • Do not start vaccinating your child until they are 2-years-old or older.
  • If possible, make sure your child is on breast milk. Omega 3 fish oils and multivitamins, preferably of the whole food variety, and probiotics (all of which can be found at the FM&WC) are essential in growing the organ reserve.

No institution can prohibit your child from attending school because they haven’t been vaccinated. Here are some links to websites about vaccines that I feel are very informative.

NOTE: If your child has been vaccinated and is experiencing some of the negative impacts, Dr. Ozzie specializes in child detoxification, ADD/ ADHD and developmental disorders.

Love in A Big Way

Childhood Obesity has become increasingly prevalent in our nation today. Dysfunction or disease, which obesity has become, starts and ends with stress. Obesity in children stems from structural and chemical stresses, but can be attributed to mental/emotional
stress as well.

Kids fall and get knocked around all the time, in fact, it’s estimated that the average child will fall close to 10,000 times before the age of six. This leads to structural stress. The brain controls the whole body and the brain stays healthy by proper sensory input – the way you move is the biggest input contributor. On average we take 6,000 steps a day, so if a muscle or a joint is off just a little bait it in can have a negative impact on your child’s brain and body. We often think that bumps and bruises have no impact on our children, but a lot of little things can add up to one big thing. Thus, it is of the utmost importance that we make sure our kids structure is balanced and aligned. The best way to do this is see a chiropractor as they are the specialists in balancing muscles and joints. Proper muscle balance increases your child’s fat burning potential.

Chemical stress is associated with poor diet. A poor diet stems from lessnutrient-dense foods caused by genetically-modifed foods containing steroids antibiotics pesticides and herbicides; high fructose corn syrup. Chemical stress is also caused by bad water; the air we breathe; and countless other things. There are a lot of chemical challenges, our children face today. We are burdened by so many toxins that we have toxic overload. And the way the body rids itself of these toxins is through the vitamins, minerals and enzymes we absorb from the foods we eat. Unfortunately, we consume so many toxins through processed foods that our bodies weren’t designed to detoxify this much causing toxicity. Sherry Rodgers M.D said it best “Never before in the history of man have we been under such tremendous toxic stress with such low nutrient dense foods in our diets”. Most noteworthy is the fact that most toxins are fat-soluble, which means we store toxins in our fat tissue. Our body’s fat capacity is infinite, which causes us to become obese.

The same receptors in your brain are also in your immune system, thus meaning that mental/emotional stress can have a huge impact on the rest of your body. Stress on kids has a negative impact on their bodies, including making them overweight. Some techniques we provide at the FM&WC to combat this negative response include acupressure while visualizing the negative situation. Acupressure has a positive impact on how the body perceives this stress. Other techniques include visualization and breathing exercises they can do at home to help decrease the negative impact.

All of these stresses have one thing in common; they set into motion a terrible cycle of adrenal stress that puts your child into a “flight or fight” mode. The adrenals have a lot of functions, but one of the important ones is to release cortisol. Cortisol helps regulate your blood sugars and it is anti-inflammatory. When cortisol is released it will increase your blood sugars and in time may lead to metabolic syndrome, the precursor to diabetes and obesity. If constant adrenaline is released from the adrenals due to stress the brain may choose to decrease regulation of the thyroid in an attempt to take pressure off your child’s heart. The thyroid is the major player in the body’s metabolism – the slower the metabolism, the less fat the body burns and the bigger it gets. Too much cortisol after a while will cause your child’s brain to miscommunicate with the body and
your child will start to self medicate with sugar, causing obesity. In addition, high adrenaline and cortisol will lead to fatigue and depression which can cause laziness in kids as well as adults.

The gold standard for functionally analyzing the adrenals is a salivatory adrenal stress test. There are a lot of techniques that can be done to remove structural, chemical and mental/emotional stress, but there is not much done about removing the damage these stresses create in the body. This is imperative to fix the problem and get back to a place of health.

At the FM&WC, we look at the individual’s diet and create a new diet specific to their genetic and family makeup. In addition, we support the body’s journey to wellness with specifically designed supplements to rebalance the body and brain coordination and repair any damage that has been caused.

Infertility treatments not an option?
Infertility treatments not working?
Looking for a more natural way to get pregnant?
Nothing’s wrong with you, but you still can’t conceive?
Suffered from miscarriages?

Statics show that one in six couples have difficulty getting pregnant and need to seek medical help. This is a terrifying statement – the most natural thing to women (and men) has become almost impossible. This has motivated me to take it upon myself to study the possibilities of natural,on-toxic solutions to this problem and to identify some of the major reasons why this is happening today. What I have found is that in almost every instance natural, non-toxic methods were the answer, because having kids should be the most natural thing we can do as humans.

I found that the biggest cause of infertility is stress – men and women are stressed out. Most of you only think of one thing when I say stress the mental/emotional kind, but there are two other types of stresses that are contributing factors – structural and chemical. All three stresses play a major role in infertility for women and men. Ladies, please don’t forget about your men. All too often we only concentrate on the women and dismiss the men. Men are stressed too and may need more help than we think. In our hurry for a baby, we use extremely powerful drugs to take over the normal body function that literally forces the body to do what it wants. Yet, the body, as many of you may have experienced, still under such extreme force refuses to get pregnant. Why is this? Could it be genetics? The answer is most likely no. The majority of the problem stems from the stresses stated above. The body is very wise. It knows that the most important thing in life is life itself. The body knows that if it gets pregnant and it is not functioning optimally, you and your baby are at risk for serious complications that may include death. So, because of stress and the dysfunction that it causes your body, your body knows it is not ready to be pregnant. It doesn’t say never, it just says not right now.

An example of how stress can lead to infertility includes toxicity. The majority of people living in an industrialized nation are over exposed to toxic chemicals and because of stress, our bodies can’t detox effectively and we can’t absorb enough nutrients from food to get ride of the toxins. Our body knows it is too toxic to grow and nourish a baby. Another example of how stress affects fertility is blood sugar handling problems that can lead to having an increase in testosterone. When there is a blood sugar handling problem the body will increase the percentage of fat which will respond with increased estrogen. This can cause a woman’s levels of estrogen and testosterone to be too high all at once. This is not conducive to having a baby.

Everything I have explained above my go undiagnosed by your primary care physician, because they are trained to look for a state of disease. The examples I previously discussed, PRECEDE disease and can be fixed, but without fixing the issue they can be the reason for infertility. These subtle dysfunctions and changes in your body is what we focus on at the FM&WC. Dr. Ozzie has specialized tests, such as saliva testing to look for these dysfunctions. Once any underlying dysfunction is discovered he can work with you to fix them naturally so your body can have a better chance of following its natural reproductive cycle.

Childrens Health Issues: Ear, Nose and Throat Infections

by

Is your child always sick?

Today, it has become “normal” that children spend most of their youth being sick with a runny nose, coughing or allergies. Parents have the mindset that it is normal for their child(ren) to be sick because they are surrounded by other children – at home, daycare, school, parks, etc. This is not true. It is not normal to be sick all the time – young or old.

Children’s illnesses range from a minor ear infection to a 24- hour virus to cancer. Any illness stems from physical, chemical and mental/emotional stress. At the FM&WC, we determine what stresses your child is experiencing through comprehensive, non-invasive testing and eliminate the stress(es). Most importantly, once stress is eliminated, we repair the damage caused by stress. A few of the common stressors in children include food allergies or food sensitivities. Food allergies may be a catalyst to decreased immune system function and lead to chronic infections. Determining food allergies/sensitivities can be done numerous ways, like acupuncture. However, the most efficient way is through saliva testing.

When you have a food sensitivity or allergy your GALT (Gut Associated Lymphatic Tissue) will be activated. If the GALT is irritated the body’s adrenal glands will produce an increased amount of cortisol. An increase in cortisol leads to gut deterioration causing the body to go into a “flight or fight” mode. The body is protecting itself from being attacked – trying to prevent the GALT from deteriorating. Increased cortisol also weakens the immune system in your child’s gut, known as “leaky gut”. Leaky gut happens when the digestive tract starts absorbing larger than normal proteins (foreigners) into the body, causing inflammation in an attempt to wall of the foreigners. Inflammation inhibits your body to go into protective mode and overreact to foreign substances. This is causes you to become mores susceptible to allergies, specifi cally airborne allergies. If your child has allergies, the first thing you should do is look at their gut.

Furthermore, a weakened immune system causes a chain reaction throughout the body causing your child to be more prone to infections. A leaky gut makes a good home for bad “bugs”. Antibiotics kill theses bad bugs, but they also kill the good bugs. Without any good bugs, your child is at risk for further imbalance in gut fl ora (good bugs) which leads to fungal and/or yeast infections. Ear, nose and throat infections are not caused by bacteria. These infections are caused by fungus. Antibiotics do not cure fungal infections, in fact, they worsen the infection. When you hear the word “itis”, as in “sinuitis” or “rhinitis” – remember inflammation.

If you have already identifi ed your child’s allergy and have had them abstain from it, remember that simply removing the allergy is half the battle. You can’t eat your way out of an illness. The road to being healthy lies in repairing the damage
that has been done. At the FM&WC, Dr. Ozzie uses specifically designed medical foods and products that can only be prescribed by a physician to repair the damage. Dr. Ozzie also looks at the structure and mental/emotional components as these may also be major catalysts to your child’s weakened.

Childrens Health Issues: Depression

A Reason to Smile…An answer to Depression

More children are depressed today and are on serious medication or in a therapy because of it. Masking this disease and living with it forever, is not the only option for your child. Dr. Ozzie of the Functional Medicine & Wellness Center focuses on determining the contributing factors of your child’s depression, eliminating those factors and then repairing the damage that was caused. All syndromes and diseases begin with stress. The three main stresses we all encounter, including children, are structural, chemical and mental/emotional. Oddly enough, these stresses have a negative impact on the digestive tract. “Why there?” you ask, because 90% of the brain’s chemicals are created in the digestive system. Ninety percent of your “feel- good” transmitters called serotonin start in the digestive tract and only 10% is created in your brain. If there is a problem with your child’s brain chemistry, then they most definitely have a problem with their digestive tract. A very prominent medical doctor (Gershon) which specializes in the digestive tract and is a pioneer in this field states that “the gut is the second brain”.

At the FM&WC, we individualize our approach by looking only at the patient in front of us (not using an average of depressed people) and determining which of the three stresses they are enduring. We eliminate the stress and most importantly work on repairing the damage that it has caused thereby giving the body the ability to balance itself. The biggest issues we see in kids when looking at the gut is food intolerance or allergy or some type of infection. These issues go undiagnosed because doctors don’t perform the right testing. For instance, to determine a food allergy or sensitivity, saliva testing is the best tool. When was the last ti me you or your child did saliva testing? When determining if an infection is present, we look at wide ranges in the immune system by looking at patterns in the blood work and narrowing the average ranges. This allows us to see chronic infections. We may also perform a stool analysis to look for infections such as fungus, yeast, bacteria, or parasites.

We also look for structural and mental/emotional stresses as both of these will invoke a “flight or fight” response. Ignoring these stresses will increase cortisol and adrenaline production from the adrenal glands. An increase in cortisol and adrenaline will weaken the immune system in your digestive tract and slowdown movement, which will irritate your guts causing an imbalance in brain transmitter creation. Also, cortisol is highly catabolic, which means it breaks you down. High cortisol levels in the brain leads to inflammation which in turn causes a process called gliosis, the degeneration of brain cells. This is a big part of all brain diseases such as depression, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, and Alzheimer’s. All inflammatory states cause a decrease in communication between all the cells in the body. With poor communication it is extremely difficult, if not impossible, for the body to realize it is low in a particular chemical (i.e. serotonin) and therefore will not attempt to create of it.
